PRE-ENGINEERING PROGRAM
Program Offerings
The primary objectives of the pre-engineering program
are to provide a liberal education and to develop a
broad scientific and technical foundation for the future
specialization. Much of the change in our civilization
in the past 100 years has been due to the work of
engineers. Through research, development, and mass
production, directed by engineers, ideas are made into
realities in an amazingly short time.
The department offers two programs
* Regents' Engineering Transfer Program (RETP)
* General Pre-engineering Program (GPEP)
After satisfactorily completing the pre-engineering
program at Columbus State University, RETP students will
be transferred to Georgia Tech, while GPEP students may
transfer to any engineering institution of their
interest nationwide. Specialization within the
engineering profession includes: aerospace, civil,
mechanical, electrical, chemical, industrial, and
computer engineering.
Admission requirements to the RETP are:
1. Georgia residency.
2. A combined SAT score of at least 1090 (including a
560 math and a 530 verbal score).
There are no admission requirements to the general
pre-engineering program beyond those required by CSU.
Career Opportunities
After graduation, career opportunities are available in
research, development, design, construction, and the
operation of large and small technical industries,
government, or self-employed as a consultant. No matter
what kind of work the engineer may wish to do, there
will be opportunities for employment not only in purely
technical fields but also in other functions, such as
general business, budgeting, rate analysis, purchasing,
marketing, and industrial management. Engineers are
projected to be in short supply for the next decade;
consequently, job opportunities for engineering
graduates appear to be bright for the foreseeable
future.
Program Requirements
Columbus State University provides many of the
fundamental courses common to the first two years of an
engineering program. The required courses emphasize
fundamentals that are applicable to engineering as a
whole and concepts and generalizations that are expected
to remain vital for an extended time. Specific
engineering courses include: introduction to engineering
professions, engineering graphics and CAD, statics,
dynamics, deformable bodies, thermodynamics, and
electrical circuits. Additional courses in mathematics,
physics, chemistry, humanities, and social sciences are
required.
After completing the program at CSU, students are
transferred to other institutions to complete the
requirements leading to a BS degree in engineering.
