Chemistry is the center of life. It explores the nature of the materials that make up our physical environment, why they possess the different properties that characterize them, how their intimate structure may be understood, and how they may be manipulated and changed. Chemistry is the science that plays a major role in civilization and deals with composition, structure, and properties of matter. Chemists are scientists who constantly seek answers to a variety of questions related to our lives; this includes medicine, foods, clothing, plastics, and the environment.
The Bachelor of Arts degree is for students interested in entering professional schools or occupations of an environmental nature.
The Bachelor of Science - Applied Track degree is for students interested in entering the field of industrial chemistry.
The Bachelor of Science - Professional Track degree is for students pursuing advanced study in chemistry or chemical engineering.
Chemists
perform essential functions in industry by converting
raw materials into useful finished products. Chemists
occupy key positions in manufacturing, production,
quality control, research and development, sales,
management, and education, Opportunities for careers are
available in the industrial sector as well as in many
agencies of the federal government. A baccalaureate
degree in chemistry from Columbus State University can
also satisfy entry requirements to higher levels of
education such as graduate schools, medicine, dentistry,
or pharmacy. Quality control positions are prime
positions today, since almost all phases of our lives
are directly or indirectly controlled or allied to the
chemical environment. Hence, an understanding of this
fundamental process is highly desirable. The skills
acquired and developed during the pursuit of an
education in chemistry are so valuable to many
employers, current and future employment opportunities
cannot be fully foreseen. If your lifetime goal is a
career in the outdoors, the laboratory, the professional
office, or in a business environment, consider
university preparation in chemistry as a means to
achieve it.
Some students transfer to the University of Georgia's
College of Pharmacy after completing course work at
Columbus State.
A degree in chemistry requires at least 123 semester hours of instruction including two years (60 semester hours) of liberal arts/core curriculum instruction and a basic core of chemistry courses in inorganic, analytical, organic, and physical chemistry, as well as exposure to applied chemistry, biochemistry, and chemical analysis. Graduates are expected to have an appreciation for quantitative interpretation, to be able to think independently, and to be able to apply skills and knowledge of chemistry to real problems. In addition, the Bachelor of arts degree requires instruction in a foreign language at the 2000 level. BS Chemistry - Applied Track BA Chemistry (Pre-Professional)
